Merlin is getting old. Hard to face, but true. He has now twice fallen off the bed. The first time, he rolled over on his back, settled there for a bit, then rolled again- right off the bed. Stunned him because he was asleep. The second time, he was walking all over the king bed sniffing, scratching looking for the perfect place to thump down. Every few seconds, he'd get up, still not right. Until he walked right off the bed! My poor little guy!

Scout, Scout, Scout, Scooter, Scouter, Little Girl, Sister Golden-Hair, she answers to almost anything. She makes me laugh! The other day (I've mentioned before how she loves pillows), I was watching as she pushed a pillow off the bed, then growled and jumped on it, then jumped back on the bed, then jumped back down on the pillow, I was laughing so hard. Another time, she was growling and wrangling with the pillow, and I came out of the bathroom and she looked up at me like, hey, I'm not doing anything I shouldn't. Like I can believe that-- she's always up to no good! Anything on the floor is fair game. Do you have a dog like this? She's a lot of trouble, but they don't come any sweeter or funnier.

Dogs Update

I was taking the dogs for a walk the other day, and we came upon a scarecrow. The dogs wouldn't go near it. Merlin did go a little closer but Scout sat on her behind and refused to move. They were both afraid of the scarecrow and I couldn't convince them it wasn't a real person!

I'm packing up the Christmas dishes and my collection of pitchers while Scout sits on my lap. Yes, it does slow the process down, quite a bit. I pushed her off my lap, and she butt-backed back on in no time. She's like glue! But she's sweet and soft and loveable. Darn, I wish she was completely house-trained.

Yeah, probably not safe. Actually I can't, but they can sit on my lap when I'm parked. Let me explain further. They both love to take car rides; however, Merlin is only happy if he is sitting on my lap. If he isn't on my lap, he begins panting heavily and annoyingly until I let him crawl over. So, he's a happy camper, looking out the window, giving me the "it's time to pet me" look, and looking for people or other dogs to bark at. Then there's Scout, the smaller dog, who can be loud when needed or give me soft pitable woofs, as in, why does he get to sit on your lap and not me?

The other day I had to get out of the house with the dogs, and we drove to McD's. When we arrived at the order window, Merlin got off my lap and went to sit in the passenger's seat. On comes Scout on my lap. We parked to eat my lunch and Scout couldn't understand why she couldn't still sit on my lap. There they are both sitting practically on top of each other watching me eat lunch. Afterwards, Scout being a bit more sly than Merlin, slipped onto my lap and sat there contentedly looking out the window. When she tired of that view, she turned around to look out the other direction.

OK, now it was time to drive home. As soon as I started up the car, Merlin tried to get on my lap with Scout still sitting there. Since he's the old man and wouldn't take no for an answer, I had to put Scout in the passenger seat and allow Merlin to sit on my lap. Luckily the drive home wasn't too long because here was "little girl" next to me, trying very hard to see out the window (she's too short) and sort of whimpering about how unfair it is that she doesn't get to sit on my lap too.

It's a dilemma but what can a mother do?

I can't decide whether I love or hate cats, but I'm thinking it's probably a positive relationship. If I didn't have the cats to chase or couldn't sneak into their room for food, life would be very dull.

Well, it had been dull until my mom decided I needed a playmate. As if. For the longest time, it was just my mom, dad, and me. (If you don't count the cats.) I got all the affection, the treats, the attention, ah life was good. The whole house revolved around me, I don't mind saying.

Until that day. That December day, when Mom brought home the scrawniest little chicken I've ever seen. I've come to realize she's not a chicken but some type of manifestation of the devil put here on this earth only to cause me great aggravation. You see, the little rat white poodle dog is much faster than me and a lot younger, I might add. When we're outside, she does circles around me, pretending she's the Tasmanian devil. Wait, I think I've hit on something there...

She's always getting close to sniff both ends of me or woofing at me, which is annoying in the extreme. I have to share my treats with her and, the sad part is she gets fed before me. Ah, the days of yesteryear I remember fondly- when I was the only one fed.

I figured out how to live with this animated little pipsqueak- I'll ignore her and when she gets too close, I'll bear my teeth and bark at her. So far, my plan seems to be working. I'd just wish she'd outgrow that cuteness she's got going for her. It's quite annoying. Have I mentioned that before?

I'm happy! I'm happy! Doing a happy dance! I've got a home and a mom and dad who love me. I get to chew on anything in sight and though I can tell mom isn't as happy about it as I am, I can tell she still loves me. Did I mention I like especially to chew on pillows? I've left the swing pillow in the yard after dragging it around after me but I must admit those long lounge pillows are difficult to pull off the deck. I've almost got them to the yard but mom keeps thwarting me by putting them back on the lounge chairs.

I haven't figured out why the cats don't like me. I'm friendly and cute. I've gotten close to one of them and barked at them and wagged my tail to show I come in peace, but they back up and start hissing at me. I know it will take some time, but I grow on people and other animals.

Probably my worst habit other than chewing on towels, sheets, paper, pencils, socks and underwear, is that I know I'm cute. I'm fluffy and have big ears. I guess I could have been a rabbit. I can contort my body in a variety of positions and leap over tall buildings-oops, a slight exaggeration there, ah, I can jump really high when I want to. Dog extraordinare!

And then there's my playmate, Merlin. He's an old fuddy-duddy, always barking at me, we've had a couple of close calls - just because I'm smaller doesn't mean he can have a piece of me! I think he secretly likes me. We sleep on the bed together and he doesn't mind. We do have to share pets from mom and dad. I know secretly they love me best. Did I mention how cute I am?
