THE NOTORIOUS BRIDEGROOM presents webs of deceit, a passionate romance, and a chance at redemption. It is obvious that Karen Donner possesses a good amount of knowledge of the Regency time period which shrines through in her writing. Her protagonists and the descriptions used to describe the setting made for a memorable story. The subplots and fun cast make this all the more enjoyable. The way Ms. Donner weaves comic relief into the somewhat tumultuous storyline is brilliant. This a promising debut from Ms. Donner that I think historical fans will enjoy.

The plot is filled with mystery, intrigue, danger, and romance. It’s characters are witty, loving, sexy, charming, and they keep you wanting for more. There is a lot of sexy sparks flying between the hero and heroine. They both have different agendas. The secondary characters are charming and have depth.
Review from Booklist:

Donner packs the plot of her debut Regency historical with a surfeit of danger and intrigue, and the romance between her unconventional heroine and rakish hero generates plenty of sexy sparks.

Coffee Time Romance Review:

Rating: 4 Cups

Since the death of her parents, Patience has been taking care of her four brothers. Since the death of her fiancé, she sees this as her future, giving up on getting married and having a family of her own.

Bryce, Lord Londringham, was known as the "Black Ghost" when he was a spy for the Crown. He is determined to find the French spy threatening his country and is sure that Rupert Manderley is not his culprit.

When Patience Manderley's brother Rupert is suspected of being a French spy and a murderer, she quickly travels to Winchelsea to find him and poses as a maid to get more information. She is certain that her employer, Lord Londringham, is the true traitor at first, until the two fall in love. Danger stalks Patience, however, and now Bryce must protect her as well as search for the real traitor.

This is a well written historical romance with wonderful and eccentric characters set in a turbulent time in British history. The author makes good use of this throughout the story and has an excellent grasp of the time period and the customs of Regency society. Patience is a gutsy and intelligent character, but she is a bit naïve. Bryce is world weary and wounded in the service of his country and family, a perfect hero. Other than the two of them I would have to say my favorites are the bumbling would-be criminals that keep popping up in the story first as smugglers, then highwaymen, and finally grave robbers. They unintentionally save the day and provide comic relief at the same time. The spy will be easy for the reader to deduct, but the mystery is only a subplot in this very good historical romance.

One of the novel's major strengths is the vivid period detail with which the author evokes such a strong atmosphere. The background and setting are unusual and there is something pleasingly gothic in the style. A complex, multi-layed plot provides intrigue a-plenty. The sensual central romance between the delightfully resourceful heroine and the strong but tender hero is complimented by a cast of well drawn and colourful secondary characters who add depth and charm."
